Savoring Burgundy: Maison Chanzy & local pairings
Surely we cannot miss a visit to the Burgundy wine region being all the way here in Lyon. Only a 90-min train ride from Lyon Part Dieu, we arrived the little town of Beaune. We had the chance to walk around town a little bit before meeting our wine tour group. I highly recommend visiting and even staying in Beaune as it is truly a quaint and charming town. And what better way to truly enjoy the wines of Burgundy than to pair them with locally made meats and cheeses at a classy tasting room in Maison Chanzy.
Burgundy tasting at Maison Chanzy in France
Maison Chanzy, Rully 2019
A classic white Burgundy with aromas of white flowers and coconut. It has a nice bright acidity and lemon rind bitterness on the palate. This can go really well with a buttered lemon sole fish.
Maison Chanzy, Bouzeron 2022
This is an Aligote - a rather light-bodied crisp white wine with aromas of lemon curd, quince and pear. A refreshing white wine to start off a meal, and great for the summertime.
Maison Chanzy, Mercurey 2021
This is a village wine made of 100% pinot noir, a light red wine with the classic aromas of a pinot, raspberry and forest floor. Simple and straight-forward to drink on its own.
Maison Chanzy, Santenay 2020
The Santenay has more body and tannins compared to the Mercurey village wine. It has more complexity and rounded mouthfeel on the finish with aromas of dark cherry, red currants, and forest floor.
Burgundy pairing with local meats
What a treat to be able to enjoy a glass of Burgundy wine with locally made cheeses and cured meats. For this, I choose to pair it with a red Burgundy - Bourgogne Cote Chalonnaise 2022. Even though it did not feel like a full lunch, the variety of meats and cheeses were truly enjoyable and goes nicely with the red Burgundy. It makes me salivate just looking back at this charcuterie plate.

The highlight for this wine tour was definitely the visit to Maison Chanzy. Our wine guide took the time to explain about the wine region, the winemaking process, the differences between the levels of wine grade from regional to village to 1st Cru to Grand Cru, and how to read the labels. I definitely learned a lot from this experience and it was a very last minute decision we made to purchase this tour from Viator. Thank you Viator!
